TLDR Alopecia areata significantly impacts patients' mental health and quality of life.
This study evaluated 211 patients with alopecia areata (AA) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, focusing on their awareness, beliefs, and psychological impact. Most participants were men (54%) aged 30-44 years (46.9%) with a bachelor's degree or diploma (58.8%). Key findings include that 67.8% had prior knowledge of AA, with knowledge levels linked to education and marital status. The majority believed AA could be caused by genetic, nutritional, or health factors, and 64.0% viewed it as a serious health issue. Psychologically, 79.6% experienced negative effects, such as shame (63.0%), anxiety (47.9%), and depression (36.0%). The study underscores the need for better patient education and psychological support to improve the management and quality of life for AA patients.
