TLDR Atopic dermatitis may trigger alopecia areata, and early treatment can help prevent severe cases.
This review paper analyzed the relationship between atopic dermatitis (AD) and alopecia areata (AA), suggesting that epidermal barrier dysfunction in AD could promote AA when certain target genes are present. Both conditions negatively influenced each other, with a reduction in regulatory T cell activity and increased inflammatory Th-17 cell activity. The study found that blocking IL-4, IL-13, and histamine receptors could lead to the regression of bald patches, supporting the link between AD and AA. The presence of genetic predispositions for both conditions could result in severe manifestations in offspring, highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment of AD in children from affected families.
