TLDR Food allergies may contribute to alopecia areata, and avoiding specific allergens can help hair regrowth.
This study explored the role of food and pollen allergies in the development of alopecia areata, involving 17 patients divided into children (n = 9) and adults (n = 8). Allergological examinations revealed age-dependent sensitization patterns, with children showing sensitivity to chicken eggs, cereals, yeast, soybeans, and cow's milk, while adults were sensitive to egg protein, rye flour, and oats. Pollen allergens also varied, with children reacting to weed and grass pollen and adults to meadow grass pollen. An elimination diet tailored to individual allergen sensitivities led to clinical improvement in 70% of patients, with hair regrowth observed within 3-6 months. The findings supported the role of food allergies in alopecia areata, suggesting potential new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
