TLDR Age and androgen levels significantly affect meibomian gland structure and function.
The study investigated the effects of age and androgen levels on the histological structure of meibomian glands in albino rats, using 3 groups of 10 rats each, aged 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years. Results showed that younger rats (group I) had normal gland structure with abundant meibum vesicles and high androgen levels, while older rats (groups II and III) exhibited decreased acinar cell size, reduced meibum secretion, increased basement membrane thickness, and collagen deposition. There was also a decline in androgen receptor presence and androgen levels in older rats. The study concluded that both age and androgen levels significantly impact the structure and function of meibomian glands.
