TLDR Men with benign prostate hyperplasia have more meibomian gland loss and tear film problems.
The study "Morphological Changes of Meibomian Glands in Men With Benign Prostate Hyperplasia" conducted by Shimizu, Shota MD et al., in 2020, investigated the relationship between benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The study involved 44 men with BPH and 46 control subjects. The results showed that the meiboscore, a measure of meibomian gland loss, was significantly higher in the BPH group (4.5 ± 1.4) compared to the control group (1.8 ± 1.5, P < 0.0001). Additionally, the breakup time of the tear film was significantly shorter, and the Schirmer test value, a measure of tear production, was significantly smaller in the BPH group. The study also found a higher proportion of men with androgenic alopecia in the BPH group. The study concluded that BPH was associated with meibomian gland loss, instability of the tear film, and the presence of androgenic alopecia.
