TLDR Keratin K80 is an ancient protein found in various tissues, important for cell structure and tissue differentiation.
The study investigated keratin K80, a human keratin with unique properties, structurally closer to type II hair keratins but expressed in various epithelial tissues. K80 showed a broad expression range, partnering with over 20 type I keratins for intermediate filament formation, and was associated with advanced tissue differentiation. Unlike typical cytoplasmic intermediate filaments, K80 filaments were located at cell margins near desmosomal plaques. Evolutionarily, K80 was one of the oldest keratins, present since fish, and its mRNA underwent alternative splicing, producing a variant, K80.1, specific to hair follicle and tongue papilla structures.
