TLDR Adipose-derived stem cells and platelet-rich plasma together can protect skin and hair from radiotherapy damage.
The study investigated the protective effects of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) against radiotherapy (RT)-induced skin and hair follicle damage using an immunodeficient mouse model. Human hair follicular units were implanted and subjected to RT, followed by subcutaneous injections of saline, PRP, ASCs, or a combination of ASCs and PRP. The results showed that ASCs significantly reduced RT-induced adverse effects such as impaired wound healing, alopecia, skin atrophy, and fibrosis by suppressing inflammation and promoting cellular proliferation and differentiation. These protective effects were further enhanced when ASCs were combined with PRP, suggesting potential for clinical application.
