TLDR Finasteride is effective for male hair loss, teledermatology is accurate and accepted, and cyclosporin helps treat toxic epidermal necrolysis.
The abstracts from the 2001 Combined Annual Scientific Meeting of the New Zealand Dermatological Society and the Australasian College of Dermatology covered a wide range of dermatological topics. Key findings included the long-term efficacy of finasteride in treating male pattern hair loss, the high diagnostic accuracy and patient acceptance of teledermatology despite technical and economic challenges, and the effectiveness of cyclosporin in treating toxic epidermal necrolysis in a small group. Studies also highlighted the increased erythema response to UVB in redheads, the favorable prognosis of primary cutaneous B-cell lymphoma with radiotherapy, and the successful use of radiotherapy for basal cell carcinoma of the lip. Additionally, research on p53 and Bcl-2 expression in lentigo maligna, the use of imiquimod 5% cream for Bowen's disease, and various case reports on rare dermatological conditions were presented. The importance of nail examination in diagnosing systemic diseases and the benefits of a paperless dermatology practice were also emphasized.
