TLDR Finasteride significantly increases scalp hair and prevents hair loss in young and middle-aged men.
In a study from 1997, 1,553 men aged 18 to 41 with mild-to-moderate male pattern hair loss were treated with either 1 mg per day of finasteride or a placebo for one year. The results showed that the finasteride group had a significant increase in scalp hair count, with an average of 107 more hairs and only 14% experiencing hair loss, compared to 58% in the placebo group. Assessments by patients, investigators, and a blinded expert panel all confirmed significant improvements in hair growth and appearance for those taking finasteride. The treatment was generally well-tolerated, suggesting that 1 mg per day of finasteride is an effective treatment for increasing scalp hair and preventing further hair loss in this demographic.
