TLDR Bleaching damages hair by reducing the quality of keratin and keratin-associated proteins.
This study investigates methods to distinguish hair quality using hair proteomics, particularly focusing on the impact of bleaching on hair proteins. The PLEE method, which combines SDS lysis solution with high temperatures and intense shaking, significantly improves hair protein extraction efficiency by three-fold compared to previous methods. Analysis revealed that bleaching reduces the coverage of keratin and keratin-associated proteins, leading to poorer hair quality. The study highlights the importance of protein extraction techniques in understanding hair damage and quality, with the PLEE method proving more effective than the Mase method in identifying differentially expressed proteins related to hair structure and quality.
