The study investigated the immune status and comorbidities in 57 children with alopecia areata compared to 157 without the condition. It found that children with alopecia had a higher prevalence of the focal form of the disease and were more likely to have common variable immunodeficiency, chronic tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, and autoimmune thyroiditis. These children exhibited immune system imbalances, including elevated levels of CD3 + CD4 + cells, immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM, IgG), and interleukins (IL-4, IL-6), indicating immune hyperfunction typical of autoimmune and allergic processes. Additionally, they showed reduced phagocytic activity, suggesting immune deficiency. These findings highlight the complex immune dysregulation in children with alopecia areata.
