    In this study, researchers established a type II 5α-reductase over-expressing cell line to create a reliable and convenient model for screening inhibitors of this enzyme, which is implicated in androgenetic alopecia. They transfected human cDNA for type II 5α-reductase into HEK293 cells and confirmed the enzyme's expression through RT-PCR and Western blot analyses. The cell line demonstrated the ability to convert testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) efficiently, and its activity was inhibited by finasteride in a dose-dependent manner. Using this model, they identified extracts from Curcumae longae rhizoma and Mori ramulus as potential inhibitors of type II 5α-reductase, validating the cell line as a useful tool for high-throughput screening of inhibitors.
