Both donkeys tested seropositive for Besnoitia spp. antibodies and exhibited light anemia, leukocytosis with eosinophilia, lymphocytosis, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated alkaline phosphatase. DNA analysis showed 100% homology with Besnoitia spp. The findings suggested that equine besnoitiosis might be more widespread in Europe than previously thought, highlighting the need for further research and early diagnosis to prevent the spread of this neglected disease.
