    GlossaryDermal Melanocytes

specialized skin cells producing pigment in the dermis

Dermal melanocytes are specialized cells located in the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Unlike the more common epidermal melanocytes found in the outer skin layer, dermal melanocytes are involved in certain pigmentation disorders and can contribute to conditions like dermal melanocytosis, which results in blue or gray patches on the skin.
