PTEN (Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog) is a gene that produces an enzyme involved in regulating cell growth by deactivating certain signaling pathways. Mutations in the PTEN gene can lead to uncontrolled cell division and are associated with various cancers and conditions like Cowden syndrome, which can also affect hair growth and lead to alopecia.
