    GlossaryCell Junctions

specialized structures connecting adjacent cells within tissues

Cell junctions, also known as intercellular junctions, are specialized structures that connect adjacent cells within tissues. They play crucial roles in maintaining the structural integrity of tissues, facilitating communication between cells, and regulating the passage of substances. Examples include tight junctions, which create a seal to prevent leakage; desmosomes, which provide mechanical strength; and gap junctions, which allow for the direct transfer of ions and small molecules between cells.
