    GlossaryD-dimer

small protein fragment indicating blood clot breakdown

D-dimer is a small protein fragment that is produced when a blood clot dissolves in the body. The D-dimer test is commonly used to help diagnose or rule out conditions related to abnormal clotting, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Elevated levels of D-dimer in the blood can indicate the presence of an abnormal clotting process, but further testing is often required to pinpoint the exact cause.
