    GlossaryMicroglia

specialized immune cells in the brain and spinal cord

Microglia are specialized immune cells located in the brain and spinal cord that act as the main form of active immune defense in the central nervous system. They constantly monitor the environment for signs of damage or infection and can engulf and destroy pathogens, clear away dead cells, and release signaling molecules to modulate inflammation and repair processes.
