    Mohammed Al-hakeem
TLDR Zinc and iron levels drop after bariatric surgery, needing careful monitoring and supplements.
This pilot study investigated the impact of bariatric surgery on zinc and iron levels in 15 Iraqi patients over 12 months. Results showed a progressive decline in serum zinc and iron levels post-surgery, with zinc deficiency increasing from 13.3% to 33.3% and iron deficiency from 20.0% to 46.7%. Although changes were not statistically significant, there was a trend towards higher deficiency rates in females and those with higher preoperative BMI. The study highlights the need for rigorous nutritional monitoring and supplementation to address these deficiencies and prevent complications such as hair loss.
