TLDR Preventing zinc deficiency is crucial, especially in bowel disease and chronic malabsorption, with recommended skin checks and zinc supplements.
This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of zinc deficiency as a skin manifestation of acrodermatitis enteropathica in 45 patients. The male-to-female ratio was 1.14:1, with onset in childhood for 14 cases and adulthood for 31 cases. Associated conditions included bowel diseases, chemotherapy, and postgastrectomy state. The most common skin manifestation was erythematous scaly patches with erosion, and severe hair loss was noted in 2.2% of cases. Low serum zinc levels were found in 26 out of 36 patients tested. The study concluded that zinc deficiency prevention is crucial in conditions like bowel disease and chronic malabsorption, recommending detailed skin examinations and zinc supplementation in maintenance therapy.
