TLDR Yak hair growth is influenced by genes and hormones, helping them adapt to alpine environments.
This study investigated the molecular mechanisms regulating the seasonal hair cycle in yaks, focusing on gene expression and hormonal influences. Using high-throughput RNA sequencing on 15 samples from five developmental time points, researchers identified 11,666 genes involved in the hair cycle, with 2,316 genes showing distinct expression patterns across three developmental phases. These phases were characterized by unique functions in the hair cycle, as revealed by GO annotation and KEGG pathway enrichment. The study highlighted the interaction of key differentially expressed genes and their association with hormones, providing insights into the yak's adaptation to alpine environments and offering potential for economic benefits in pastoral plateau areas.

The conversation discusses why DHT (dihydrotestosterone) negatively affects scalp hair but promotes growth elsewhere on the body. Various opinions include genetic predispositions, differences in hair follicle reactions to DHT, and the potential role of Omega-3 in reducing inflammation and promoting hair health.

community Fats on your Head to Stop Hair Loss?

      in Research/Science  142 upvotes 1 year ago
The conversation discusses the potential of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and linoleic acid, as an additional treatment for hair loss, which may inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and promote hair growth. Users humorously suggest using oils topically and discuss other hair loss treatments, but the main focus is on the science behind fatty acids and their role in hair health.

Hair loss treatments like Minoxidil, finasteride, and RU58841, focusing on their effectiveness and side effects. It also highlights the disparity in medical research funding between hair loss and conditions like endometriosis.

community My Theory Of Androgenic Alopecia

      in Research/Science  17 upvotes 2 weeks ago
Hair loss is linked to cellular physiology and the IGF-1 to TGF-B1 ratio, not just androgen sensitivity. The theory lacks evidence, while finasteride and minoxidil are effective treatments.
