TLDR Type 2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 increase skin's vulnerability to Staphylococcus aureus, which could be important for treating atopic dermatitis.
The study investigates the interaction between type 2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13, Staphylococcus aureus (SA), and keratinocytes derived from hair follicles in the context of atopic dermatitis (AD). The results show that SA alone increases the expression of AD-relevant markers and decreases keratinocyte differentiation markers. This effect is amplified when IL-4 and IL-13 are present. Furthermore, IL-4 and IL-13 stimulate the growth of extracellular SA, suggesting that these cytokines negatively affect the skin's defense against SA. This could be relevant to understanding and treating AD.
