Triglycerides, Independent of Ferriman Gallwey Score, Is a Main Determinant of Free Testosterone Index in PCOS

    TLDR High triglyceride levels are a key factor affecting testosterone levels in women with PCOS.
    The 2019 study "Triglycerides, independent of Ferriman Gallwey Score, is a main determinant of free testosterone index in PCOS" involved 76 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and aimed to determine the correlation between hormone profile, lipid profile, and clinical profile with free testosterone index. The study found that high levels of triglycerides and testosterone, and low levels of Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) were associated with hyperandrogenism in PCOS patients. However, the Ferriman Gallwey score, an indicator of hirsutism, showed no significant association with the free testosterone index. This suggests that different PCOS phenotypes may display different endocrine and metabolic disorders, and the free testosterone index is a valuable potential measurement for diagnosing PCOS. The study concluded that managing triglyceride levels could be an important aspect of managing PCOS and its associated symptoms, including hair growth issues.
