TLDR Trichoscopy is not specific for diagnosing telogen effluvium and both telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia often occur together.
The document from 2012 discussed the limitations of trichoscopy in diagnosing telogen effluvium, a common form of hair loss. The study found that while certain signs such as empty hair follicles, a predominance of follicular units with only one hair, perifollicular discoloration, and upright regrowing hairs were frequently observed, they were not specific to telogen effluvium. The study also noted that there was no significant difference between the findings in the frontal and occipital areas of the scalp, which helped differentiate telogen effluvium from androgenetic alopecia. However, the coexistence of both conditions was common.
