TLDR Red light therapy may help prevent memory loss as we age.
Transcranial Red LED Therapy (RL-TCLT) was investigated as a non-invasive method to prevent age-related hippocampal memory impairment. It showed promise in improving brain function by enhancing mitochondrial function and reducing cognitive deficits in animal models and limited human trials. The therapy improved cognition, protected nerve cells, and promoted synaptogenesis and neurogenesis. In aged mice, it prevented spatial memory loss and reduced oxidative stress, while also showing potential in reducing amyloid-β plaques in Alzheimer's models and improving cerebral blood flow. Despite these promising results, further research was needed to understand the precise mechanisms, determine optimal treatment protocols, and confirm its efficacy across various neurological conditions.
