TLDR Topical olive oil protects mice skin from harmful electromagnetic radiation.
The study investigated the protective effects of topical olive oil on the skin of adult mice exposed to 3600 MHz electromagnetic radiation (EMR) for 2 weeks. Thirty mice were divided into six groups, including control, olive oil, EMR-exposed, pre-EMR, post-EMR, and recovery groups. EMR exposure caused significant histological and biochemical changes, such as increased epidermal thickness, dermal cell atypia, hair follicle degeneration, reduced catalase activity, and elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), TNF-α, IL-6, P53, caspase 3, and HSP-70. Topical olive oil application, particularly before EMR exposure, mitigated these adverse effects by reducing oxidative, inflammatory, and heat shock stress factors. The recovery group showed partial improvement, indicating the potential of olive oil in protecting against EMR-induced skin damage.
