TLDR A new hair loss treatment was created using minoxidil and tretinoin in stable niosomes, which effectively released the drugs over time.
The 2017 study "Preparation and Physicochemical Characterization of Topical Niosomal Formulation of Minoxidil and Tretinoin" from Kerman University of Medical Sciences, Iran, developed a niosomal formulation containing minoxidil and tretinoin, two FDA-approved drugs for hair loss. The niosomes, prepared using non-ionic surfactants and cholesterol, were found to be stable and effective over time, with a 95% confinement percent of minoxidil and 80% in tretinoin. The niosomes released 65% of their content at 60 minutes, which was higher than minoxidil but lower than tretinoin solutions. The study concluded that niosomal formulations could be a new drug delivery system in the treatment of hair loss.
