TLDR Phospholipid soft vesicles improve topical drug delivery for better skin condition treatments.
The review discussed the use of phospholipid soft vesicles, such as ethosomes and glycerosomes, for enhancing topical drug delivery in treating various skin conditions, including acne, infections, inflammation, psoriasis, skin cancer, and hair loss. These vesicles improved drug penetration and efficacy by fluidizing the lipid bilayers of the stratum corneum. Notable findings included ethosomal gels showing significant improvement in acne symptoms in a clinical trial with 40 patients, ethosomes enhancing antiviral effects against herpes simplex virus, and ethosomal systems improving drug delivery for skin cancer and hair loss treatments. For hair loss, minoxidil ethosomes demonstrated higher skin permeation and follicle targeting. Overall, these vesicular carriers showed potential for improving drug delivery and therapeutic outcomes in skin-related medical conditions.
