Ethosomes: New Prospects in Transdermal Delivery

    Biana Godin, Elka Touítou
TLDR Ethosomes can safely and effectively deliver various drugs deep into the skin.
Ethosomes were noninvasive delivery carriers that enabled drugs to reach deep skin layers and/or systemic circulation, characterized by simple preparation, safety, and efficacy. They were effective in delivering a wide range of drugs, including highly lipophilic molecules and cationic drugs. A double-blind randomized clinical study showed significant improvement with ethosomal acyclovir. Preliminary studies indicated potential for delivering plasmids and insulin. The technology also showed promise for introducing agents into cultured cells and microorganisms, suggesting numerous opportunities for future therapeutic developments.
