Topical Calcipotriol Mixed with Topical Steroid Versus Topical Steroid Alone in Treatment of Alopecia Areata

    Mohamed Ibrahim ElGhareeb
TLDR Mixing calcipotriol with a steroid is almost as effective as using a steroid alone for alopecia areata and has fewer side effects.
The study conducted in 2019 involved 40 patients with mild-to-moderate untreated Alopecia Areata (AA), divided into two groups of 20. Group A was treated with a topical steroid (betamethasone valerate 0.1%) twice daily for 12 weeks, while Group B was treated with a gel containing calcipotriol 0.005% mixed with betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% twice daily for the same period. The Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) score was used to evaluate the treatment outcomes. Both treatments resulted in a significant decrease in SALT scores after 3 months, with no significant differences between the two groups, suggesting similar efficacy. However, the group treated with the gel containing calcipotriol and topical steroid reported minimal adverse effects, making it a promising therapeutic option for AA.
