Topical Application of Ketoconazole Stimulates Hair Growth in C3H/HeN Mice
April 2005
in “The Journal of Dermatology”
TLDR Putting ketoconazole on the skin can help mice grow hair.
In the 2005 study involving 20 seven-week-old male C3H/HeN mice, researchers found that topical application of 2% ketoconazole (KCZ) solution once daily for three weeks significantly stimulated hair growth compared to a control group that received a vehicle solution. The treated mice showed a greater area of hair regrowth, indicating that KCZ could be potentially useful for treating hair loss conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and male pattern hair loss. No adverse effects were reported, although the mechanism behind KCZ's hair growth stimulation was not determined.
