TLDR Flutamide and finasteride reduced sex hormones in pregnant hyenas, but increased them in males.
The study investigated the effects of the anti-androgen combination, flutamide plus finasteride, on hormone concentrations in pregnant spotted hyenas and male hyenas. In pregnant hyenas, the treatment was associated with a reduction in sex hormones during late gestation. In male hyenas, flutamide alone was associated with an increase in testosterone and androstenedione concentrations, while finasteride alone did not have a consistent effect. The combination of flutamide and finasteride increased testosterone and androstenedione concentrations in treated males. The treatment also paradoxically suppressed LH and androgen concentrations in pregnant hyenas, but not in males.
