September 1990 in “Clinical Endocrinology” Prepubertal simple hypertrichosis was characterized by excessive vellus hair growth in children without other endocrine disorders, and its cause was unknown. A study involving 16 girls with this condition and 12 age-matched controls found that testosterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate levels were similar between the groups, indicating no increased androgen secretion. Additionally, sex hormone binding globulin, free testosterone, and the testosterone/SHBG ratio were normal, suggesting typical testosterone bioavailability. However, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels were significantly higher in the affected girls compared to controls, while 3α-androstanediol and its glucuronide were similar. The elevated DHT levels' clinical and biochemical significance required further investigation.
