TLDR Cyclosporin A does not change sex hormone levels.
The study investigated whether Cyclosporin A influences sex hormone levels, given its side effect of hypertrichosis. It involved 5 female and 11 male patients experiencing hair overgrowth during Cyclosporin A treatment, compared to a control group on Azathioprine. Hormone levels, including serum androgens, prolactin, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, 17 beta-estradiol, and cortisol, were measured. Results showed no significant differences in serum androgens or prolactin levels between the groups, with 17-OHP in the low normal range and cortisol below normal due to cortisone treatment. SHBG was normal. The study concluded that Cyclosporin A-induced hair growth was not due to hormonal changes.
