TLDR Crataegus pinnatifida extract promotes hair growth in mice.
The study investigated the effects of Crataegus pinnatifida extract on hair growth using a mouse model. The extract, rich in polyphenols and proanthocyanidins, was administered to 7-week-old C57BL/6 mice, resulting in the promotion of hair growth by inducing the anagen phase. This was evidenced by changes in skin color, hair shaft thickness, and hair density. The extract increased the number and size of hair follicles and accelerated the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells by activating specific signaling pathways (Erk, p-38, JNK, and Akt). Additionally, the extract raised the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, suggesting enhanced cell survival and protection against cell death, thereby promoting hair growth.
