TLDR Phenolic compounds may help treat hair loss, but more research is needed.
This literature review examines the potential of phenolic compounds, such as tannins and flavonoids, in treating hair loss. It includes in vivo studies and clinical trials, focusing on compounds from medicinal plants. The review analyzes three types of clinical trials: randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, involving three hair tonics and one lotion. Procyanidin class phenolic compounds are highlighted for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which promote the anagen phase of hair growth by reducing reactive oxygen species and inflammation in hair follicles. While phenolic compounds show promise, further research, particularly through randomized clinical trials, is needed to fully understand their efficacy and potential as alternatives to conventional hair loss treatments.
