TLDR Higher androgen receptor levels in bald areas may cause hair loss, while estrogen receptors have less impact.
The study investigated the expression of androgen receptors (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER) in bald and non-bald areas of the scalp in 6 cases of androgenic alopecia. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that AR levels were higher in bald areas, while ER levels showed no difference between bald and non-bald areas. The findings suggested that increased local androgen activity might be associated with hair loss in androgenic alopecia, whereas estrogens appeared to have a lesser role in its pathogenesis.
