TLDR Targeting LPA could help treat skin disorders.
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) was identified as a key phospholipid involved in various physiological and pathological processes, particularly in the skin. It was biosynthesized by autotoxin and PA-PLA1α/PA-PLA1β and degraded by lipid phosphate phosphatases. LPA interacted with both Edg and non-Edg family receptors, mediating processes such as embryonic development, angiogenesis, and wound healing through several signaling pathways. In the skin, LPA played a significant role in hair follicle development, wound healing, and other conditions like pruritus and scleroderma. The review highlighted the potential of targeting LPA synthesis or its receptors as a therapeutic strategy for skin disorders.
