Lipoprotein(a), often abbreviated as Lp(a), is a type of lipoprotein found in the blood that consists of an LDL (low-density lipoprotein) particle attached to a specific protein called apolipoprotein(a). Elevated levels of Lp(a) are considered a genetic risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes, because they can contribute to the buildup of plaques in arteries.
