TLDR Statins can reduce androgen levels and improve symptoms in women with PCOS.
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of statins on hyperandrogenism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by analyzing nine randomized controlled trials involving 682 patients. The study found that statins significantly reduced testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone levels compared to control treatments and improved cutaneous symptoms such as hirsutism and acne. Subgroup analysis indicated no significant differences in the effects of different types of statins or control treatments on androgen levels. The findings were confirmed to be stable through sensitivity analysis, suggesting that statin treatment could effectively reduce androgen levels and improve symptoms of hyperandrogenism in PCOS.
