TLDR Standardized data is essential for diagnosing scalp and hair conditions in males.
This observational study aimed to standardize trichoscopic findings of normal scalp and hair in males. Conducted over a year with 360 male subjects, the study used a Heine Delta 20T digital dermatoscope to capture images from various scalp areas. Results indicated significant age-related differences in anisotrichosis in the temporal and occipital regions, with the highest prevalence in the frontal area. White dots were most common in subjects over 50 years old, particularly in the vertex area. The study concluded that comparing findings with standardized norms is essential before diagnosing pathological conditions, noting that certain trichoscopic features like black, yellow, and red dots, scarring, and hair shaft abnormalities are indicative of scalp or hair disorders.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
