TLDR Nanostructured lipid carriers can effectively deliver spironolactone to hair follicles for treating hair loss.
This study explored the use of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) for delivering spironolactone (SL) directly to hair follicles to treat androgenic alopecia. The researchers aimed to enhance the drug's efficiency and safety by minimizing systemic side effects associated with oral administration. SL-loaded NLCs were created using an emulsion solvent diffusion and evaporation method, resulting in spherical particles with sizes ranging from 215.6 to 834.3 nm and an entrapment efficiency greater than 74%. The study found that SL existed in an amorphous form within the NLCs, and the drug release exhibited an initial burst followed by sustained release. Confocal laser scanning microscopy demonstrated the potential for these NLCs to deliver SL into hair follicles, indicating a promising approach for localized treatment of scalp disorders.
