TLDR Dead Sea water and magnetized saline water can protect skin from UVB damage by activating autophagy.
This in vitro study demonstrates that Dead Sea water (DSW) and saline magnetized water (MW) can effectively reduce UVB-induced DNA damage and inflammation in human keratinocytes by activating autophagy. Both smart fluids significantly decreased the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and inhibited the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, with saline MW showing superior DNA protection compared to DSW. The study also found that the autophagy inhibitor wortmannin reduced the photoprotective effects of these fluids, indicating that their chemopreventive properties are primarily due to autophagy activation. These findings suggest that DSW and saline MW could be used as active ingredients in topical products to prevent UVB-induced skin damage and aging.
