TLDR SLC45A2 and GPNMB genes help control chicken feather color by promoting melanin.
This study explores the genetic mechanisms behind feather color in chickens, focusing on melanin deposition. By conducting transcriptome sequencing on feather follicles from chickens with different plumage colors, researchers identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to melanin pathways. The study highlights the significant roles of SLC45A2 and GPNMB in promoting melanin deposition, particularly eumelanin, in chicken melanocytes. Overexpression of these genes increased the expression of eumelanin marker genes and melanin content. The research provides insights into the genetic regulation of feather color, suggesting that SLC45A2 and GPNMB are crucial for melanin production and feather coloration diversity.
