Recent Advances in Understanding the Role of the Skin Microbiome in the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis

This review explores the role of the skin microbiome in maintaining skin health and its implications for treating atopic dermatitis (AD). It highlights the symbiotic relationship between skin microbes and the human body, emphasizing their role in enhancing the immune response and protecting against pathogens. The review discusses current therapeutic strategies targeting the skin microbiome for AD treatment, noting the limitations and future directions of this research. It suggests the development of a skin-on-a-chip-based microphysiological system as a promising future strategy for biomimetic in vitro studies and human skin equivalent models.
