TLDR Skin-associated adipocytes help protect the skin from infections by supporting its immune barrier.
This mini-review discusses the crucial role of skin-associated adipocytes in skin barrier immunity. These adipocytes, located in the subcutis and dermis, produce cytokines, adipokines, and antimicrobial peptides, which interact with immune cells to influence inflammation and contribute to the skin's immune barrier. The review highlights the interconnectedness of the skin's microbiome and various barriers, noting that dysfunction can lead to skin diseases. Adipocytes are suggested as potential therapeutic agents for inflammatory skin diseases like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, though their dual nature requires careful management to maximize benefits and minimize pro-inflammatory effects.
