TLDR Intralesional vitamin D3 injections can improve vitamin D3 levels and may help treat alopecia areata.
This study evaluated the impact of intralesional vitamin D3 injections on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels in 20 adults with localized patchy alopecia areata. Over nine weeks, participants received three sessions, resulting in a significant increase in serum vitamin D3 levels from 9.31 ng/mL to 23.55 ng/mL. The proportion of patients with vitamin D3 deficiency decreased from 85% to 30%, while those with optimal levels increased from 10% to 35%. However, no significant correlation was found between baseline vitamin D3 levels and alopecia areata severity. The study suggests that intralesional vitamin D3 can improve systemic vitamin D3 status and has therapeutic potential for alopecia areata, though baseline levels do not predict disease severity or treatment response.
