TLDR Both steroid and vitamin D3 treatments are safe and effective for patchy alopecia areata, with steroids showing slightly better results.
This study compared the effectiveness of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide and intralesional vitamin D3 in treating alopecia areata in 40 adult patients. The patients were divided into two groups of 20, with one group receiving vitamin D3 and the other receiving steroids, each for up to three sessions. Results showed a significant increase in McDonald’s score in both groups, with 55% of the steroid group experiencing terminal regrowth in all areas compared to 25% in the vitamin D3 group, although the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.063). Both treatments were found to be easy, safe, and affordable options for patchy alopecia areata.
