TLDR Sericin from silk cocoons could be a promising drug delivery tool, but stability and consistency need improvement.
Sericin, a glycoprotein from silk cocoons, is highlighted as a promising biomaterial for drug delivery due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and ability to interact with various drugs. Recent advancements include sericin-based nanoparticles, hydrogels, and microneedles for antimicrobial, anticancer, and neurodegenerative applications. These systems enhance drug encapsulation, targeted release, and therapeutic efficacy, while reducing side effects. Despite its potential, challenges such as molecular variability, formulation stability, and regulatory issues persist. Future research should focus on optimizing sericin extraction and integrating it with advanced technologies to maximize its therapeutic potential.
