TLDR Sericin from silk cocoons could be a promising drug delivery tool, but stability and consistency need improvement.
Sericin, a glycoprotein from silk cocoons, shows promise as a drug delivery platform due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. This review highlights its potential in antimicrobial, anticancer, and neurodegenerative treatments, utilizing techniques like nanoparticles and hydrogels for improved drug delivery. Despite its advantages over synthetic polymers, challenges such as molecular variability and formulation stability persist. Future research should aim to refine sericin extraction and stability, and integrate it with advanced biomedical technologies to enhance its therapeutic potential.
