Serial Sections of Atrophic Acne Scars Help in the Interpretation of Microscopic Findings and the Selection of Good Therapeutic Modalities

    The study examined the microscopic characteristics of 31 atrophic acne scars from 5 patients to aid in selecting effective therapeutic modalities. Serial sections of the scars revealed key features such as keratin plugging in hair follicle orifices (32%), multi-channelled tracts (29%), decreased dermal thickness, loss of pilosebaceous units, and inflammatory cell infiltrates in the dermis (77%). Insufficient dense collagen fiber deposition was noted in 29% of the dermis. The findings suggested that treatment should consider these histopathological insights and potentially involve combination therapy for improved outcomes.
