TLDR Effective acne scar treatment should use combination therapy based on specific skin changes.
This study examined the microscopic characteristics of 31 atrophic acne scars from 5 patients to inform therapeutic approaches. Key findings included keratin plugging in hair follicle orifices (32%), multi-channelled tracts (29%), decreased dermal thickness, loss of pilosebaceous units, inflammatory cell infiltrates (77%), and insufficient dense collagen fiber deposition (29%). The study concluded that effective treatment should consider these histopathological findings and employ combination therapy.
